#girlboss | Book Review

Hello world 🌸  Today I’m going to be doing my first book review! Reading is one of my fave hobbies, so why not incorporate it in my blog? Let’s get to it.

#girlboss was written by Sophia Amoruso who is the founder of the online clothing company, Nasty Gal. She was the CEO but dropped down to Executive Chairman & promoted Sheree Waterson, who at the time was President and Chief Product Officer. Sheree Waterson was previously Chief Product Officer at lululemon athletica & President at Speedo. Sophia stepped down after the first edition was published, the second edition has her new title on the cover as well as a forward about what has happened since she originally published the book.

Sophia states clearly in the first few pages that #girlboss is not a self-help book or a way to get rich quick. I’ve seen a fair share of readers claiming it as a self-help book & criticizing how she is talking about herself & her journey. She does give advice about manifesting your dream career, yet staying true to who you are at pivotal points throughout the story, but her journey is the main point of the book.

One of the reasons I fell so hard for this book was because of Sophia’s raw honesty. She discusses growing up as an only child in a middle-class family with two hard-working parents & then later in her teens & early 20’s as an angsty, creative rebel who frequently committed petty theft & went dumpster diving.

She grew out of her rebellion when she was struck with a hernia in her groin & had zero health insurance. She took a job checking ID’s at an art school in San Fran & came across her love for selling vintage clothes on eBay. From there she started scrounging California for vintage finds to resell. The Nasty Galaxy was born from her eBay days but skyrocketed to new proportions once Sophia launched it as an independent retailer.

I don’t want to spoil the rest but I would recommend this book if you are uniquely creative, love fashion, are introverted, or just enjoy an interesting story. If you love the book you will adore the podcast. Sophia interviews a different Girlboss in each episode asking each guest what was their first job was & how they got where they are today. Sheree Waterson, Courntey Love, & Bethany Cosentino of Best Coast are just some of the leading ladies she’s spoken with. #girlboss has made it into my all time favorites & in all honesty, I kind of worship the podcast.
